Ocean shipping maintains impressive growth even though freight rates are still high

Despite being heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, shipping services still recorded an increase in the total volume of goods cleared.

Statistics from the Vietnam Maritime Administration show that, in the first 4 months of 2022, the volume of goods transported through seaports was estimated at about 8 million TEUs, up 2% over the same period last year. Especially, the volume of imported containers recorded more than 2.8 million TEUs, reaching the highest increase - 8%.

The volume of goods through the seaport was estimated at about 59 million tons in April alone. Container goods account for about 2 million TEUs.

(TEU - a unit of measure equivalent to 20 feet (ft); the term TEUs is the equivalent of a standard container with a length of 20ft × width 8ft × height 8.5ft)

Based on statistics of the Maritime Administration, the regions with an increase in the volume of cargo throughput such as Quang Ninh (up 11%), Quang Nam (up 19%), Thanh Hoa (up 6%).

Along with that, also recorded the volume of goods arriving at seaport areas of Binh Thuan, Can Tho, Nghe An, Ha Tinh,... decreased slightly by 4 - 13%.

In general, the shipping industry is still having a strong development, making a significant contribution to promoting economic trade, import and export of goods between Vietnam and other countries in the world.

Recently, the Ministry of Transport has just issued Decision No. 522/QD-BGTVT with adding 10 new ports to the ports of Vietnam's seaports, including:

Up to now, Vietnam has had 296 seaports, of which 52 are in Hai Phong city. To achieve the target by 2025, the contribution of logistics services to GDP will reach 5-6%, the growth rate of logistics services will reach 15-20% as set out by the Government in Decision No. 211/QD. - TTG on February 22, 2021, the shipping industry in particular needs to continue to review, supplement and complete the master plan of the port system to create the best conditions to ensure maritime security and safety.
