Ho Chi Minh City proposes to build a billion-dollar international transshipment port in Can Gio

Ho Chi Minh City has submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister for consideration and approval of a project of about 6 trillion USD to build an international transshipment port in Can Gio.

On June 30, Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee - Mr. Phan Van Mai signed a document to submit to the Prime Minister proposing the investment of an international transit port in Can Gio district. Specifically, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City proposed the Prime Minister to assign the Ministry of Transport to coordinate with the City People's Committee and relevant agencies to assess the advantages, opportunities and possibilities of building Can Gio international port. In addition, the Ministry of Transport and competent agencies also need to consider and propose to adjust the seaport planning in Can Gio.

Can Gio port area has a favorable geographical position when located on international maritime routes and favorable natural conditions in terms of channel depth, which can accommodate container ships with a tonnage of 250,000DWT (24,000TEUs) to operate. on trips to Europe, Africa, and America. Therefore, building an international port here can help boost the city's marine economic development and create a competitive advantage over other countries.

Can Gio international port is expected to have a scale of about 7.2km of wharf, capable of receiving the world's largest container ship (24,000 Tens), with a throughput capacity of 10-15 million TEUs. The project has a total investment of about 6 trillion USD.

According to information from the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, in the period 2015-2020, the volume of goods through the seaport in the city increased by an average of 7% per year. It is expected that goods output will maintain an increase of about 5% per year in the period 2021-2025.

In addition, in the master plan for development of Vietnam's seaport system 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister in Decision 1579/2021, in the coming time, wharves on the Saigon River (in which with Can Gio wharf in Cai Mep river) will carry out relocation and conversion of functions.

Therefore, it is necessary to invest in the construction of a container port system to meet the transport needs of the province in the coming period.
