Heavy Equipment Launching & Handling (Load-in / Load-out)
SPMT Load-Out for Heavy-Lift Cargo – An Optimal Solution for Offshore & Heavy Industry Projects
Load-out is a critical phase in the transportation and installation of offshore structures such as oil & gas platforms, offshore wind components, and heavy industrial modules. It marks the transition from onshore fabrication to offshore installation and requires the highest levels of precision, safety, and technical control. Even minor deviations can impact structural integrity and project timelines.
Today, the most efficient and widely adopted load-out method is the use of SPMT (Self-Propelled Modular Transporters), thanks to their flexibility, high load capacity, and ability to maintain stability throughout operations.

SPMT System Overview
SPMT is a self-propelled hydraulic modular trailer system designed specifically for oversized and heavy-lift transportation. Equipped with advanced hydraulic technology, SPMTs allow 360-degree wheel rotation, enabling maneuverability in confined spaces while maintaining load balance even on uneven terrain.

Each axle line can carry approximately 30 tons, and multiple modules can be combined to form a transport configuration tailored to specific project requirements. At PPL, SPMT systems can operate independently or in combined configurations (parallel or inline) to handle extremely large and heavy components in ports, factories, and industrial zones.
PPL’s Execution Capability
In Vietnam, only a few logistics providers have the capability to execute large-scale load-out projects. With over 11 years of experience in oil & gas and heavy industry, PPL stands out as a leading provider.
Notably, PPL successfully performed site move and load-out for a nearly 4,000-ton offshore substation topside (TPC OSS Project) at PV Shipyard. This marked the first time in Vietnam that such a large offshore topside structure was fully engineered, transported, and loaded out by a domestic company using SPMT—demonstrating PPL’s technical expertise and execution capability in offshore energy projects.

Load-Out Process in Offshore Projects
Offshore structures such as jackets, topsides, and wind components are typically fabricated at yards near ports and transported to installation sites via barges or specialized vessels. Load-out is the process of transferring these structures from quay to barge.
This process is highly complex due to the cargo’s size and weight, which directly affect barge stability and structural integrity. It is also influenced by environmental factors such as tides, waves, and weather conditions.

Supporting Equipment & Systems
In addition to SPMT, load-out operations require supporting systems such as:
Hydraulic and electric winches for barge mooring
Hydraulic lifting systems for height adjustment during transfer
Synchronization systems to ensure precise positioning
These systems ensure stability and safety throughout the entire operation.

SPMT Load-Out Operation Principle
The process begins with lowering the SPMT to position under the structure, followed by hydraulic lifting to elevate the cargo. The SPMT then transports the load to the quay, where the hydraulic balancing system ensures stability even on uneven surfaces.
At the barge interface, the SPMT adjusts height and axle positions to precisely place the cargo onto support structures. The entire process is controlled via an integrated electro-hydraulic system, allowing each axle to operate independently and adapt to load distribution.
Advantages of SPMT in Heavy-Lift Transport
Maintains load stability throughout transport
Even load distribution across multiple axle lines
Reduced ground pressure, suitable for weak surfaces
Flexible configuration for oversized cargo beyond standard limits

Project Execution Requirements
Load-out operations require close coordination between equipment, engineering, and execution teams. From site survey and load calculation to center-of-gravity analysis and movement planning, every step must be precisely controlled to ensure maximum safety and project success.
PPL’s Commitment
With a modern SPMT fleet, experienced engineering team, and proven track record across major projects, PPL delivers end-to-end load-out solutions for oversized and heavy-lift cargo.
PPL is committed to meeting the highest technical standards in offshore energy projects, including wind power and oil & gas, reinforcing its position as a leading Vietnamese logistics provider in the heavy industry supply chain.
