PPL successfully performs site-move and load-out of record-breaking 4,000-ton offshore substation topside fabricated by PV Shipyard

Precious Prestige Trading and Logistics One Member Company Limited (PPL) has set a new milestone for Vietnam’s logistics industry by successfully performing the site-move and load-out of an offshore substation topside weighing nearly 4,000 tons (including launch beams). This is the largest single module ever handled in Vietnam entirely using Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMT).

The module was fabricated over nearly two years by Petrovietnam Marine Shipyard (PV Shipyard), marking a major step forward in the company’s journey into the offshore renewable energy sector.

A Vietnamese enterprise mastering heavy transport technology

On June 21 and 22, 2025, at PV Shipyard Port in Vung Tau, PPL successfully completed the site-move and load-out of an offshore substation topside weighing nearly 4,000 tons, with massive dimensions of 58 meters long, 39 meters wide, and 37 meters high (including launch beams).

This is considered the heaviest offshore substation topside ever transported and launched in Vietnam using SPMT technology by a local company to date.

The topside, fabricated by PV Shipyard from August 2023 to June 2025, is a key component of the offshore substation system, serving the function of collecting and converting electricity from offshore wind turbines before transmitting it to shore.

The massive topside was transported by PPL using specialized SPMT equipment.

Heavy-lift logistics powered by modern equipment and local expertise

To carry out this complex operation, PPL mobilized a cutting-edge transport system including 156 SPMT axle lines and six Power Pack Units (PPUs), operated by a team of experienced in-house specialists.

This project not only showcases PPL’s outstanding capabilities but also marks a historic milestone for Vietnam’s engineered logistics sector: the first time an offshore substation topside has been planned, transported, and launched entirely by a domestic company.

At the event, Mr. Do Hoang Phuong, Chairman and CEO of PPL, emphasized that mastering the use of German-imported SPMT equipment, Bentley project management software from the UK, a well-trained engineering team, and rigorous management processes represents a strategic step forward — not just for PPL but for the entire Vietnamese logistics industry.

“In the past, Vietnam depended heavily on foreign contractors in this field. Being able to independently handle the load-out of ultra-heavy structures like topsides or jackets is a breakthrough that reflects the country’s maturing logistics capabilities,” he shared.

Strategic synergy for national infrastructure

According to Mr. Nguyen Nam Anh, Deputy General Director of PV Shipyard, the successful fabrication of the nearly 4,000-ton offshore substation topside represents a major achievement not only for PV Shipyard but also for Vietnam’s mechanical manufacturing industry.

This success reaffirms the country’s capacity to independently design, fabricate, and manage large-scale structures that meet the stringent technical requirements of offshore renewable energy projects.

“We highly appreciate the collaboration between PV Shipyard and PPL — a trusted partner who successfully performed the transport and load-out of the topside. This success once again proves that Vietnamese contractors can take full ownership of the process, from design and solution development to equipment control and early delivery to international clients,” Mr. Nam Anh stated.

Leading the way in heavy-lift logistics for national-scale projects

In just a few months, PPL has consistently delivered several large-scale logistics projects. At the end of March 2025, the company successfully transported a 3,200-ton substation jacket and four monopiles weighing nearly 700 tons each.

In June 2025, PPL also completed the transportation and load-out of nearly 800 oversized cargo shipments (ranging from 350 to 2,387 tons per non-divisible unit) for the CHW2204 offshore wind power project, as part of the EPC package managed by PTSC.

Whether in oil and gas, renewable energy, or transport infrastructure, PPL is demonstrating its ability to deliver integrated logistics solutions for some of the largest and most complex structures — an area once dominated by international contractors.

Sustaining Vietnam’s global logistics competitiveness

These consecutive large-scale, high-demand projects — involving advanced transport systems, skilled technical teams, and specialized logistics solutions — are a testament to the rising position and competitive capability of Vietnamese enterprises like PPL.

PPL continues to help elevate Vietnam’s heavy-lift logistics sector, contributing to the nation’s sustainable development and global competitiveness.
